Default vacuum ball?

78 L48. Bought the car as a non rolling project and I have a back plastic ball with various other parts in the back of the car. Its fairly clean, so assuming it is actually from this car then it must have been an interior part. Its roughly a 4-5 in ball with a mounting tab on one side and a port labled "VAC".

I have tried searching and cannot seem to find what this part is. Anyone have some insight?

Congratulations on the 78. Purchase the assembly instruction manual (AIM) for it. You're going to want the AIM for more than parts identification.

Post a pic of your 4-5" ball. It does not sound like a Corvette part.

The 78' AIM may be a supplement to the 74' AIM, as I believe that there were only minor model changes after 74'.

that ball possibly came from a C4, they are used to increase vacuum volume for headlight operation...among other things, possibly was used for the same on yours

There are AIMs for each model year and major changes after 74.

Im thinking C4 as well. I have looked through the AIM and FSM and didnt see anything. Its pretty difficult to look for a part in the AIM if you dont know what it goes too though I figured folks on here would have the answer. There is also a handful of clipped wires I cant seem to identify with wiring diagrams either. Lots of fun taking over a project!

Could be a C4 part, but I'm pretty sure their headlights were operated electrically.

Yep, my 95' C4 does have that same ball in the front left corner

Question:

"Anybody know what the softball sized plastic ball w/ vacuum line in left side front wheel well is for? I have one in my '86 that was badly cracked. Fixed the vacuum leak (it's T'd with the cruise control modulator) and was wondering what it did -- assuming it's some kind of accumulator. My Haynes manual doesn't cover it, maybe need a Helms... "

Answer:

It's the vacuum canister for the cruise control.

Follow the vacuum line from the right rear of the plenum, through the check valve to the left side of the inner fender well, where the line splits and goes forward to that canister and up to the curise control servo. FYI, the other line from the cruise control servo goes through the firewall to the brake switch.

It so happens that I recently had to trouble shoot the cruise control on my '88.

Could be, but I haven't been under the clamshell of the 95' for many months now! It's all been about the 74' for the last year
