In the picture below, which is from an '81 there is something on the parking brake cable up by the transmission, lite gray in color that I have not seen before, it is not on my '81 and I have no idea what it is....anyone know?
It appears to be a cable adjuster.
It has a hook inside that grabs the cable, as you tighten it up, it takes the slack out of the cable.
Someone has added it, not original.

Bubba also appears to have forgotten your catalytic converter
IT takes up extra length in the parking brake cable- I've seen them used when the inline adjuster is frozen or the cable is too long for whatever reason. Bubba fix. Use that instead of fixing the real problem.

Why would this be a bad fix? Instead of replacing and rewiring, fix what you have. How would this cause future problems besides maybe down the road needing to replace the cable that you would have had to do anyway?

Because, the reason someone did this, is the cable has stretched, and apparently the adjustment is rusted, therefore not allowing it to be adjusted by the intended procedure. A bandaid.
That added on adjuster may also bang against the underside of the car, making noise, and scratching up the underside.
If you are going to devote time to a repair, do it right the first time.
The cable should be replaced, it has weakened.
not everyone has unlimited time and money to throw at their cars , as long as it doesn't bang around its a perfectly fine fix. at some point the real problem will need to be corrected , but if you are more interested in driving than fixing its a good way to go.
First off....this is NOT my car...just wanted to be clear on that one.
Anyways, when I got my car it had a Bubba cable fix....Bubba had welded a small socket to the original cable adjuster in order to give it additional range or length...to take the slack out of the cable.
Long ago I replaced all of the parking brake parts. I think I still have that Bubba fix someplace.
Thanks for the responses.....I thought it was some type of length adjuster....just have never seen this on a car before now.
the "bubba with the engineering degree fix" doesn't look like an immediate problem to me.....let me ask this: how often is the emergency brake used or needed??? on an automatic car....almost Never. maybe a little more frequently on a manual ride.
