Default Changing the oil pan

While underneath my 75 L48 (stock) I noticed that the oil pan is pretty dented on the bottm. Looks like one of the PO's must have bottomed out at one time or another. Is it possible to change the pan w/o pulling the motor. If so how difficult of a task is it?

Not hard. Pull the steering out of the way and you can get right to it. I have done it and it will take you a day.

You can remove the pan, but you may have to unbolt some of the steering linkage and let it hang down a little. Other than that, it's not much of a job.

I changed the oil pan on my 73 454 without any problems. I have a 4spd and had to remove the clutch inspection/bell housing cover. With that off I had enough room to move the oil pan lateral and give me enough room to take it out. I cant remember if I took of some of the steering linkage to move it out of the way.

I've done mine a couple of times. The only steering part I had to unbolt was the idler arm from the frame. Once it is unbolted, just pull down on the steering drag link to get a few extra inches of clearance.

Not bad at all.

Idler arm from frame, passenger side, two bolts, drops linkage a couple of inches, pan comes out. Not bad, just time.

After reading the posts that is what I did with mine also. I thought I moved something on the suspension but was not sure. Now I am after reading about the idler arm.

Also, not sure if it affects small blocks but I remember when I dropped the pan on my big block, it made life ten times easier if the timing mark was pointed straight down or at the 180 position.

And when you replace the gasket, make sure you get a Felpro 1 piece one!

Position won't affect SB. Good to know for BB though.
