Default 76 sbc runs rough

my 76 has been starting very hard and running terrible. I used to not have to give it any gas to start, now i have to pump it and once started i have to hold it at 2000 rpm or she'll conk out. If i hold it there after a minute or two i can back off and it'll idle really rough. Then if i go down the road a ways i can stop and it will idle great. But if i shut it down, i can start it back up, leave it sit for more than say 5 minutes and i've got to start all over again.

Maybe some how my float bowls in my carb were draining out after the motor's off? Someone put sight plugs on the float bowls which are junk and now i can't get them out to check the level. I'm running a standard sbc and 650 holley double pumper. I thought maybe my timing was off too so i double checked that.

Any idea would be great, thanks.

Put a good stock carb back on the car! the original was a great carb that most of us use, it needs to be rebuilt correctly or like the carb you have now, it won't run right!!!!
buying a carb at a local parts house is junk, they never run right. Where are you located????
Talk to Lairs, see if he has a correct carb.
