I had the same problem with my '82, but with the passenger side. I read an earlier string on the topic somewhere, directing to firmly slide a very small flat-blade screw driver between the two hinge halves while gently but firmly rocking the seat forward until it "gives." After identifying that the issue on mine was with the outside (nearest the door) hinge, I was successful with fixing it - what a great feeling by having that utility restored), and applies a liberal coat of WD40 lubricant directly to the culprit hinge - it has not reoccurred, since.
