So when I bought my new project I found it had been seriously molested, all interior pieces have changes or just missing parts.
I just received my new shifter console from Willcox via Al Knoch. I have looked at the AIM and searched the forum. Someone in here asked the same question but it was never answered.
What are the brackets and nuts riveted to the bottom of the console for?
I also need to do some trimming and drilling on the new console, do the holes for the shifter bezel have screw clips or do they screw into the plastic?

Opps I was way wrong.
The shift plate on both my 70 and 73 had clips on the plastic tabs of the console.

Reason: Incorrect info
It is a 73 but I should have been able to figure that out from looking at the broken console. Doh..
Clips make more sense but the old console have all the tabs broken off so kinda flying blind. I do have the AIM, but don't see the clips in the schematic.

Check the AIM for the page showing the console, shifter plate, etc. If the clips were used, the AIM shows them.
Ditto for the vent cables; there's a diagram in the AIM showing how they mount, where they go (left and right, obviously), and even a blurb about adjusting them.

I just got my center console today and I can understand why you are confused.
It came in a box with no padding but it did arrive OK.
Here's the diagrams from the AIM.
There are no holes drilled for screw #1 and no U nuts at that location.
There missing the hole on each side of the front where the short trim parts attach, also missing the U nuts for that area.
At the rear there are no holes to attach the parking brake console.
The U nut is on the parking brake handle base.
I put the shifter plate into the shifter console and looking from the top it fits OK but the part #8 in a circle (on the AIM) is a quarter inch lower than the shifter plate. If you put a U nut on there and make it tight the part will break it off so don't tighten that to much if yours is the same.

Looks like you got the same one I did. I have drilled some of the holes to fit the shifter bezel but have yet to fit it to the car. My shifter bezel is tight but I am not going to worry about until I mount it in the car. I am gifted at the art of making stuff work but for some reason I seem to treat this like its made out of gold.
BTW that is exactly how my came in the box, I was a little surprised.

Decided to change my shifter console yesterday and I'm having a hard time trying to get it to fit at the front.
The old and new are cut differently at the front, the old has a thin tab in the center (marked with a 2) and the new one has a shorter tab and is 1/4 inch thick because of the foam.
Any suggestions?

I have the bracket (it's still mounted in the car) but I can't get the console to fit over that bracket and under the radio.
Seems like the foam is to thick.
Hey Pete,
Have you tried to rivet the bracket to the console first as shown in the aim? That might compress the foam a bit. The side fixations have some play in them and the bracket is 'flexible'. I've got no good photo of the front of the console but mine looked the same. I bought it a couple of years ago but on mine the side holes where cut open

The bracket needs to attached to the console first. I dont have a rivet gun so I use machine screws to attach mine.
I would remove the radio bezel, bolt the console in place then put the radio bezel back in. I am sure there is the proper way to do it, but thats how I got mine to fit.

Thanks for the help, I sure need it on this project.
I see why I have two problems, I was trying to fit the console over the bracket while it was screwed on the car and now that I removed the bracket I see that a small piece of the old console was broken off and still attached on the top of the bracket.
Pete.. What console is that (brand)? The CA shift consoles usually have the holes in them, not sure about Al's.
I will tell you both that pushing this forward to get the screws installed can be a pain.
I have an old trick for doing this, and it works... if you email me at Support@Willcoxcorvette.com I'll share...
Tej, you are correct... the bracket must be installed on the console before it is installed in the car. The hardest part about this job will be getting the two nuts on the studs for the radio bezel.

FWIW: the support bracket does not necessarily have to be riveted to the underside of the console. Mine is installed in my 68, but not riveted to the console.
