you can use a little silicone or urethane in place of the gasket

I think the OE part was just oiled paper...you can make one easily enough. You just need to have some kind of rust barrier between the two parts like Sixfooter mentioned.

Thanks again for the response. I wasn't sure if it was a clearence required for something, or squeak prevention, or whatever. The left side knuckle I took off on this rebuild had caked-on gunk in this area. Apparently the bearing seal was leaking through the years. Will scrape it off with a putty knife and then clean up with solvent to see what I have. I'll make something out of paper gasket material for a replacement.
