Default confussed 81?

hey, I been doing a lot of reading and everything I've read says the 1981 corvette vin numbers have 18 letters and numbers. My 81 has 17 letters and numbers. I'm trying to figure out which plant it was made at. my vin # is 1G1AY8765BS427339. Help Please....

All vehicles prior to 1981 had so standard format. The manufacturer could create their own VIN #'s in any fashion they chose.

However, in 1981, ALL vehicles went to a standardized 17 digit VIN#.

There are NO 18 digit VIN#'s after 1980.

All 1981 and newer cars have a 17 digit VIN#, not 18.

It's a St. Louis car. The 11th digit of the VIN tells you. S=St. Louis 5+ Bowling green.

Where have you been reading this? Don't go back there.

The S is the plant code for St. Louis. The code for Bowling Green is a 5. The B is the model year code for 1981.
