If its the same as the 77 its joined to the shaft. You have to take them out together by accessing the back of the switch. around the perimeter there is a tab that needs to be pushed in, then the shaft and **** can be pulled out... I'll try to find a photo so you get the idea.. or maybe someone has a better description!!
Its the silver button nearest the ****... a swine to operate with the switch out.. even trickier with the switch in the dash.. but with some wiggling and pressing u can get the shaft and **** out..

It should be so easy....After 50 years, I finally ran into a stem that doesn't want to release & I didn't want to destroy my light switch trying to remove the stem for 10 minutes.....
