I've ordered the Corvette assembly manual and the Chassis restoration guide. Anyone suggest anything else that will be helpful?

Default Body

Finally have the body home. Looks really ruff. On driverside door on aft end the panel that holds the bolt for the door lock is been torn down the side on the corner, almost 1/3 of the way down. Looks like it was torn from not being supported properly. On passenger side rear quarter the rolled edge around the fender well was mostly solid body filler, yep it wasn't applied properly either so when the fender flexed from sitting on the ground it all came loose. The fender itself has several cracks won't know how bad until pain is removed. Lot of body filler everywhere on the rear section. Almost looks like they were trying to repair cracks with filler instead of glass.

I cut the windshield out with some SS wire from my welding machine. Bed is rusted but not too bad, cant tell about the area behind the cowl, I think the area is called the "birdcage". Worst rust is inside the cabin on the bottom of the bed. Quite a bit gone. Don't know what it is but there is some type of rectifier under the dash, so much of the panel is rusted its just hanging there by one screw. Those panels can be replaced but I'm curious about whats under the upper part of the cowl.

The assembly manual came today. Not what I expected, looks like a giant parts book. Is there a Assembly Instruction manual that actually talks you putting this together? Upside there isn't any doubt about the parts that are supposed to be there. The Chassis Restoration guide looks like it will be very useful.

I know to use heat on the cement to separate these panels but where can I find something that tells me how to remove the cowl or the entire rear section of the car.

More good stuff though. I hadn't paid much attention to the front clip until I got it home. I think it's a new after market piece. I noticed overspray paint on some of the parts. This front clip is one piece with no cement on it anywhere and no cracks. The glass looks like the stuff we used to hand lay our boats with.

Today first blood was drawn for this project. While removing the windshield I reached under the dash to pull the wire and put about a 1 1/2 cut on my hand, just a scratch. Now I have to do some cutting and welding on some rusty parts, tit for tat.

Any suggestions on:

1. Cowl removal
2. Rear section removal to see if it can be salvaged
3. A better assembly guide than the Corvette America one.

Happy New Year Yawl!

Default body buck

Built the body buck and mounted the car on it. After looking at this thing it seems that at one time or the other it was wrecked or the owner that took it apart did a LOT of damage. My brother the body man came and he even made the comment of how ruff is is.

I suspended the front cap from the ceiling of the dirty shop, same place this body is. It is a new one piece cap. No glue lines anywhere in it and it looks to be hand laid.

I'll check a few more things and decide to put it back together or part it out. I'll make that decision while I'm making some repairs on the old Fairlane, need to get that one sold anyway.

In the previous post I kept refering to the cowl when I was actually talking about the firewall, one too many Becks that afternoon.

Everyone be safe this evening!

if you have the broken off part for the transmission, it could be welded back together.

It was lost I assume when the other guy took it apart, it can be made though and if I put the car together I'll use the TKO 600 with the .64 OD.

Had one in my last project and loved it.

Default One piece

Has anyone here ever installed one of the one piece rear sections?

If you post some pictures of the body we may be able to give you some advice. My 69 was in very ruff shape and fiberglass repairs aren't really to hard.

You might look for an old Ecklers book as it has a lot of tips, but the book is hard to find.

As others have said, pictures would be great. A car with that much accident and rust damage may warrant being parted out, or a more solid but less complete example found to build. Sell the extra parts and save yourself the trouble of rust/fiberglass repair on a car you're not sentimentally attached to. Best of luck with whatever way you decide.

Default parting out

Fiberglass repair is ok, my family built fiberglass boats for years and still do some repairs for a few friends and our own boats. After cleaning the car up I can see damage, some severe on every panel the rear clip has. Shame of it is all the new parts that are here. There s still one big box full of stuff I haven't went through yet, found a complete center instrument panel with instruments last weekend.

Yes I may consider parting it out, I will research the one piece rear to go with the one piece front already here.

With my schedule this will take 2 to 3 years for me to do. As far as pictures go there are still a few learning curves posting pictures with this Macbook pro I just purchased a few months ago. Somethings are easier, some aren't. My grandson is supposed to be here today, maybe he can accomplish this feat.

Default 68

After considering the Fairlane project at hand and the Cobra It's getting harder to try to spend the two to three years this car would take me.
This weekend I'm going to try get a list of all the new parts that are here with the rest of the car. I'll post them on the for sale area to sell as one package with the rest of the car.

Sounds like a good call. Unfortunately, some must die so that other (cars) shall live.
