Hi Y'all,
Been away a bit. Funny how work takes over your hobbies sometimes. Anyway, I am removing the motor in my 81 w a 4 spd. Having it rebuilt re a lower end knock. I am hoping to seperate the bell housing from the block, move the motor forward a few inches and lift away. Is that cool or do I need to take the whole thing w the bell housing and tranny with it? Engine is stripped of all accessories and radiator is removed. thanks.
with the front of the motor stripped(including the crank pulley) and the rad removed, it will come out as one piece from the side. use a load leveler so that you can tip the trans end down when needed.

what do you mean "one piece"? one piece w the tranny? or one piece just the block the way i want?
If you pull the radiator and core support, along with the hood, you can pull the engine and trans as a unit, then separate them after it's out. If you strip the front accessories off the engine, and remove the bellhousing and trans (or leave them in the car) you can move the engine slightly forward and pull it without removing the radiator, core support and hood. I just pulled my BB like that. Removed trans and bellhousing from the bottom, then pulled the engine.

Thanks a lot. Thats a vote of confidence that it can be done that way. We are going to just pull the engine and leave the bell housing and tranny behind. Radiator and hood are gone, will only make it easier.
I just did this on our 79, hadn't pulled a motor in 30 years. Took out the radiator, left the support. Left the tranny in the car. Just make sure you support the transmission. I used wire from the bolt holes to a 2x4 running across the compartment. With padding under it. I did it that way because we had to move the car after the engine came out.
removed my engine by myself out of my76, removed the transmission first(auto) then pulled the motor. The radiator and everything in front was out because I was going to refurbish the motor area. I rented a cherry picker and had it out in about an hour, taking my time. Took about the same time to put it back in. The car was up on jack stands high enough to slide the tranny under it and jack it up to hook it up(by myself again). Not hard to do, just take your time and make sure everything is safe!!.
