So based upon what I've learned on this great forum I tried repairing my loose side view mirror. As learned I soaked the mirror in gas overnight. I tried to pry the mirror out (mistake) as I put a tiny chip on the glass. Here's my tip - I used my 'speed pass' for toll roads. I used the suction cups on the speed pass to pull the mirror off. The ball socket on mine was screwed down against a nylon washer that had split thus loosing all tension. I replaced the washer with a 'better' (quality I hope) nylon washer and re RTV'd the mirror. Hopefully the suction cup tip will help others if they try the repair.
WTH!! That was short lived. A few weeks back I was blowing my own horn on fixing my side view mirror. Well - it failed again and is loose, moving around at 70MPH. (My head hurts from move around with it looking for cars!) When I'd repaired it I'd RTV the mirror in so good that I'm not even attempting to remove it again so I've ordered a new mirror piece. My question for anyone is as follows; is there anything other than a nylon washer to hold the required tension against the ball socket? I suspect I had over tightened the bar and it caused the washer to split out again. I'm trying to think of better way. All suggestions are and will be appreciated.
FYI - the replacement mirror glass was $19.99 with shipping, so I figured Id try it again before I just order a completely new mirror assembly.
I'm currently thinking if I add multiple thinner nylon washers it may not be as susceptible to split out as one thick washer. Any Engineers out there to comment / suggest ?
Thanks
