Default NC Antique Inspection

I recently moved to NC. It was my understanding that any vehicle over 35 years old does not require a safety/smog inspection. I was told at the DMV, however, that any vehicle over 35 years old brought into the state must be inspected by the DMV. Anyone with any recent experience with these inspections? thanks

in charlotte the sheriff does a fraud and theft inspection after you pay the sales tax/or register the car. they take pictures and check the vin tag, look at the present title and bill of sale then run the numbers thru the data base that will show any past blemishes on the car's title. after a few weeks, the title is mailed to you. be sure to register the car as an antique-the property tax will only be $5 per year rather than $150.
call the police/sheriff and ask for the 'license and theft bureau' which is part of the nc dvm.

I recently bought a car with a Virginia title and the DMV has to inspect the car before I actually get a title, although I have a year to actually do that. Virginia doesn't require a notary to transfer title. I also bought a car in Kentucky and I received a clear title transfer with no problem since they process a vehicle title just like NC does. So it varies depending on which state you purchase the car in and how it transfers to NC. Beware of the Antique Auto registration. It can put some serious limits on how often and how much you actually use your car. I checked with my insurance underwriter and chose not to get one since it limits my driving dramatically. Car shows, occasional short trips, etc. It takes away my ability for long trips, club cruises over a set number of miles, etc. Not good for me. For a show car/trailer queen/rarely driven Sunday-for-ice cream cruise car it's OK.
