Default Rear wheel stud

I was wondering if there is a way to install a new wheel stud on rear passenger side of my 82 without removing the spindle? I read there is a way to get them in with drilling a hole in the backing plate but were on plate? Would I have to still remove the rear e brakes? Some say to cut 1/8 in off the stud will that be a problem?…thanks

Don't know is a 81 is the same as a 82, but I did my 81 without removing spindle. its been a while but I think I just turned the spindle stud hole to where there was enough room. think it was near the bottom and then pulled it through with washers and lug nut. no drilling involved

You can do it by drilling into the back of the brake shield. If I recall, it would be along the top edge. There is a space up there.

As far as cutting the stud, I would see no issue assuming you are replacing it anyway.

don't even think I removed the brake shoes. I do remember I had to start it at an angle and some where on the back plate there was enough room.

Guessing it's basically the same as the other (older)

1-3/4" stud can be tricked into place

Here's from awhile back when I did one of mine.
Pics long gone but the grinding I mention was just a slight amount to keep the head of the stud from digging into the backing plate. Just a few passes on the grinder.
I know a few comments were made about upgrading to larger studs to keep from tearing them out, but come on, for a stock Vette

Job done, I ground a little off the rear edge of the stud. Not much. I first pulled back the shoes on e brake and took out the star adjuster. Positioned the stud to be removed at 6 o'clock. Tapped out the old broken stud.Which came out easy after lubing it yesterday. I ground a slight edge of the head of the new stud.It was still tight. Then I tapped the lug in side ways as it dragged on the backing plate. Then it popped in. At that point I put some big washers on the stud in front and drew it in with a conventional lug nut until it was seated on back. The hardest part was drilling out the rivets holding the rotor on. I do have to say that you guys are the best and thanks for the advise.
