Default Fuel Filter

70 vert, 350/350 Rochester 4BBL - quick question - the fuel filter in the carb, is it supposed to be the short (approx 1") paper filter or the longer version? Please confirm the position of the spring (it goes in the carb first, then the filter) etc Thanks !

Okay saw a video on youtube, spring first, then short paper fuel filter with opening towards fuel line opening. Please confirm and what applications use the longer version of the paper fuel filter ( a vendor at a car show was trying to convince me that this carb used the longer version paper filter) Thanks !

Neal are you the original owner?

I checked the vendors sites, some list the short for '70-'74, some list it for '70-'75.

It interestingly does not show the filter in the AIM.

Maybe it is in Cliff Ruggle's book, I will check this evening.

no I am not. your claim has me wondering now.

My car is mostly intact, it has an 80 rear bumper and the rad was not orig but everything else seems legit. a few trim pieces not withstanding.

interestingly enough when I went to the parts store for a filter they pulled both and I compared it to the one I had in my hand to get the long one.

it might behoove me to check the numbers on mine. maybe its a replacement.

It wont bother me either way as I was not interested in originality when I bought it.

Oh and Ruggles book is on my wish list. I hear its good.

The early cars got the short filter. By the mid-70's, the standard filter was longer. And a better choice, IMHO. The longer filter should flow better than the short one and take that much longer to clog up. (Not NCRS correct, but) you will need to swap in a long inlet fitting to accomodate the long filter.

Do you have a pic of the long inlet fitting and does the spring size change if you go to the long filter? Will the carb except both sizes ?

The GM part number I have for the long inlet fitting is 17059861. That's in parts group 3.740.
Dunno if those numbers are obsolete by now, but I saved the bag it came in.
The spring is the same for both sizes.
I had to slightly bend the fuel line to get it to fit.
