there is a 4 digit code on the lock cylinder, that should help identify the 6 number of key cuts.....GM uses 6 cuts, not 5......
normal GM cars have flats on the ignition key edge and oval for the trunks/glove box.....The key number ignition is decided by the year ....10/12, 40, 42, 46 ect with flats on the edge
whats on the cylinders?
The extra set of cylinders that I have do not have a 4 digit code of any kind on them . I do not have the door panels off of the car to check the ones in the car. My 63 does have a 4 digit code on them as I just had them out recently but I am not sure that GM continued to put that code on them in the 70's.
I just checked my code book and It goes at least to 1980....somewhere along the way GM advertised keys with anti theft or chips in them....I`m not sure on those after 1980 didn`t check
Thank you for posting the picture. Does the square key say
GM
cars
Curtis
B-46
and have a "J" stamped on it.
Thanks
Jay
I have both original sets ... one very worn set that is on my everyday key ring (as seen in the pic), and another that hasn't seen nearly as much use. Neither set has 'cars' or 'Curtis' or 'B-46' or a '4-digit code' (that I can find).
Each key from both sets has the 'GM' insignia on both sides that you can barely see in the pic. The square keys are stamped 'J' and the round keys are stamped 'K'.

Thank you so very much for confirming that information. That tells me exactly what I needed to know. The previous owner just confirmed for me that he did in fact change the original Ignition out of the car which he says that I have in my spare parts without a key. He also believes that the door locks are the original ones in the car also without a key. So now I have to remove the door panel and have the door lock keys made and then put the original working ignition back in and the door lock keys should operate it.
Just did my Keys today from A gm dealer. They cut my keys from a gm key code ,The Round key is not for the doors. The keys they cut for me did not work on Doors just in the ignition only .I got the keys to work on both door and ignition . send me a pic of your key and I may be able to help you . Do change anything anything because Them may be all OK
Thank Joe

Hello Joe,
Thanks for the information. My problem is that my ignition gas been changed and I do not have the original key. I have a non original key for the ignition that is now in the car but I do not have a key of any kind that fits the door locks. I am going to have to take a door panel off and get the lock cylinder out and then have a key made to fit it and then rekey the ignition to match the door key. That is the only way that I can figure out how to do it. The one key that I do have that does look original is the one that I described above with the word Curtis and B-46 stamped on it but it does not fit the doors or the ignition.
