Mecum will be holding their annual Bloomington Gold auction this Friday and Saturday at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles IL. Over 400 Corvettes are expected to cross the block during the two day affair including a unique 23-car collection comprised entirely of Black Corvettes ranging from 1954-1969 which will be offered at no-reserve.

The collection was assembled by Bill Mullis of Ashville, North Carolina. According to a documentary by Michael Brown Productions, Bill started with a couple of Black Corvettes and realizing that the black cars are much harder to find, he continued to add only the best examples available.

Mullis’ Black Corvette collection features at least one Corvette from 1954-1969, representing every year that Black was available from the factory. In addition to being Black, many of these Corvettes have the engine options that most collectors desire: big blocks, fuelies and high performance V8s. The Corvette featured in the above picture is an early 1966 Corvette Coupe with a 427/450 hp V8 and the 36 gallon fuel tank.

The Bill Mullis Black Corvette Collection is scheduled to be sold Saturday morning at Mecum’s Bloomington Gold Auction.

 

I realize it's a 2011 article....but what would cause a man to sell such a collection (never mind...I did a search).

At least others will be able to enjoy these cars now!

 

That guy has excellent taste in cars, the best of the best.
The '62 Biscayne they gave a glimpse of would be my choice. Well, maybe the 360hp SWC or the '60, and that '67 big block looks pretty nice....

 

I remember looking at them at Bloomington before they went across the block- the '68 and the '69 were OK cars, not great.

Some of the cars were excellent; others were just black.

 

I had a bunch of great pics from that collection but I lost them in a computer crash. This is the one I have left:

 

Some people swear to never own a black vette - but I am in the other camp, as I hope to always have a black vette
