Another common problem for overcharging depending on wiring is the ignition key to alternator signal. This is what the regulator read as voltage. If there is any parasitic resistance on this wire it will read lower voltage and compensate by higher voltage output until it reads the correct one.
Myself, I like and run a TuffStuff brand alternator. Hard to pass up American made.
