I need a portable engine hoist for my garage. The ones I borrowed do not reach over the nose on my C3's far enough. To save some running around I thought I would ask what portables you guys are using.
I have a 2 ton hoist for my shop - overkill but i like it. Bought it off craigslist for $100 in great shape. These are hard to sell, it's worth checking CL in your area. Here's a picture of me using it to pull the 351 out of my '70 mustang mach 1.
I have one of the one ton fold up lifts you can get at Harbor Freight, Northern Tool, Ebay, etc... I have to take the left front wheel off and go in at an angle. It works very well like this. I might get nervous with it extended out lifting a big block with iron heads and intake with the tranny attached, but otherwise it is more than adequate.
I have to angle mine to the side when I do motor swaps.
I just have a regular old one as shown above, I don't think there are any others.

Same here, the regular hoist I have was not long enough to reach in and pick the motor from the front of my 85 Camaro so I had to grab it from the side. You could however fins a cheap gantry crane with a chainfall, also useful to do a body off!

I've used the Little China (harbor tool) cherry picker for a c3 and an 81 z28 if you come in from the side you can make it work. You have to work at it and its a lot better if you have a helper but it will work.
Same here. Cheap harbor freight lift works fine from the side. Even with a BB and tranny mounted. No problem, just gotta do it from the side. Take off drivers side wheel and go for it.

I have the car raised on 4 jack stands so I can roll underneath on my creeper. This floor crane boom easily extends to grab BBC engine/trans from the front. I do use a cardboard freight load leveler.
