The Second Coming
Does it count as double when you go through it once without the frame off, then wait 15 years and re do it including the frame? The pictures are in Chronological order up to today. I'm guessing , Because Im not adding up the parts receipts , maybe 40K. Then again It could most likely be way more by the time I'm finished this second time.

Ever bought a 35 year old boat with the idea of redoing it and using it as a hobby? Most hobbies like playing golf, hunting, fishing, etc. do not return any cost like green fees, golf *****, bait. Use your car as a hobby, decide what you can afford each year for that hobby and then enjoy the heck out of it. It will keep you from getting disappointed.

I too am upside down in my 1981 between what I paid for it and then the paint, suspension, power steering, weather strips, etc. I am still slightly south of 20k but that is still more than what it is worth. At the end of the day I just want a fun car not an investment. In fact I will probably be dropping another big chunk of cash for some nice 18 inch wheels soon.

I'm on the other side of this discussion. To get my car, I labored for a guy @ $10.00 an hour for 400hrs., so no cash out of pocket. I did all the work myself, except the last 5% of the body work, putting on the paint and lifting the body on and off. I sold my stash of old GM parts and bought all the parts I needed for my '71, and so I have about 6k out of pocket in mine. Lotsa sweat, though.

Defiantly a labor of love mine is still in pieces, and I have $25,000 in it. Everything is bought except the paint and interior! I will never sell her, never!
I have a ways to go but its coming together.

It's not much different than deciding if you're going to repair a daily driver that isn't worth much-how much is it going to cost to replace it with something that will do the same thing?
With our Corvettes, it's a similar question-how much is it going to cost to buy something else that will be just as fun?
Cars are losers (usually) when you do the accounting, but unless you can't pay the mortgage don't worry about it!

In hindsight, I paid too much for my car when I originally bought it AND I am continuing to put more money into it. I can never sell it, because I couldn't afford to...it would be like giving free money away.

I have 12 - 15K in 76 L82 (to include purchase price), will probably spend somewhere between 5 - 10K more before it's done, don't know don't care. As others said I don't plan to sale her and it's a hobby

I don't add up my totals either. I have easily spend what I paid for the car (6k) to fix it up.
I look at it as an investment though in the future. I plan on keeping the car for at least 20 years.

Yeah, I'm upside down in my '71. But I bought this car to begin a life long bond with my son when he was born back in 2005. Through the years, it's been priceless, and it's only getting better. He doesn't talk about the $$$ vacations to Disney, but he'll ramble on about our trips to Carlisle & Hershey. Money well spent in my book !

I keep every receipt because 1. Im a psycho and 2. for Capital Gains tax reasons. I was actually quite used to selling my Corvettes for more than I had in them. Buy low, sell after the Corvette market rises.
Unfortunately, this car that I planned to just "clean up" after a long search for a real triple black car took on a life of its own:
...so I won't be worrying about filing any Capital Gains forms when I sell this one!
I get closer to breaking even with every long drive I take, though.

I keep a up to date spreadsheet. everything except gasoline. so far purchase price plus 50% in 6.5 years..
initial sales tax and title transfer fees, was a huge bite just to get it on the road after purchase, then insurance, plates for 6 years...
I am maybe close to breaking even if I was to possibly test the market.
