if you like the car ,that price is not that bad .if you want to flip the car it may be a little high .if you do buy the car, change the clear fuel filter .lots of fires with gas lines like that.
Thanks again. Everyone has been very helpful. I have learned one thing from this one post about corvettes. If you ask 10 people you will get 10 different opinions on value that vary pretty widely. So this car could be worth 10K to some people and practically worthless to others. Such is the case with a lot of older cars I guess. The car I may be trading for the vette is a classic as well. It's a modded out 72 Super Beetle with a Baja setup that's pristine.
I was just going to ask what you are trading with, because that is the other side of the coin in this deal. post some pics of the VW. Though I do like V-dubs a baja bug has a pretty limited market, at least in NJ. And a stick 81 is a little rare (5757 made) then no more C3 sticks for 82. So you are not "paying" $8000, if you can not move the VW for that, even if that is what you have in it. What? you don't get back all the money that you put into a car???
Here are some pics of the Bug. Well over 10K invested in the Bug so I definitely understand you don't get out what you put in to these project cars. I'm guessing if I tried I could sell the bug for 8K with not a lot of problem. But again, with these old cars that are modded a bit, value is in the eye of the beholder.
What a beautiful VW inside and out. Compliments on the build. Love the paint scheme but I would return the sheet metal on the back end to stock looking AND then keep the VW. You would turn more heads with that yellow beauty then with the '81 vette. And I'm saying this from a vette lover perspective IMHO.
If my wife saw your car for sale, she would be begging me to buy it for her ... she's German and her first car was a '65 VW.

Go on Craigs list and see what they are going for. A car like the one you have in the picture is going for around $10000 in the NY area. When I was looking for an my 80 I came across some that were in worse condition than that for more. If you like the car trade for it. It would be easier to sell than the bug. There is more of a market for a vette. The market for the bug are limited. I can't see a 50 year old man buying the bug but he would go for the vette.
RobbyH, nice bugs! Yours are probably worth more than the bug I have. Here's something that a lot of the guys on the forum will relate to. Most hard core VW guys would rather have an all original Bug rather than the modded one like mine, though VW guys don't really care about any numbers matching...haha.
I've looked on ebay and craigslist and similar corvette's(same year, similar condition) are selling for 8K and above so as long as the vette is solid underneath with no rust I'm leaning toward making the trade.
This seems like a truly fair deal where the trade values are very equal.
You guys all rock and all of this information has helped me quite a bit. Thank you all so much and keep the advice coming if you have any more.
My eyes . seeing that "Bug" say trade .. Personally I see a car that I would not want friends seeing me get into ... Sorta the ole fat chick theory or moped theory ....
And if a current Corvette owner is into your bug .. man i would go for it like my a$$ was on fire and the vette was water ..
diehrd, LMAO. The guy with the vette wants the Bug because of the gas mileage and he says that the pedals are bit too close together on the vette so he sometimes hits the brake at the same time as the gas. He's an older gentleman with hip problems. I think it's cool that there are some people out there that can be into a classic beetle and a classic vette at the same time. I get A LOT of attention in the bug when I drive it around but it's not about that for me. I love the car but I've been driving it around a couple years and I think it would be cool to try out something new. What could be more different from a 60HP VW bug than a 300 HP corvette??
Unless I missed something it is about 190HP and not 300HP - depends on which motor was put back in.
Hate to break it to you but as much as I love my 81, it is NOT a fast car. In fact I have a 1835cc motor with dual carbs in my 72 bug and I think it would probably out run the Corvette in a stop light to stop light run
The vette has a crate motor in it rated around 300 HP. not a stock motor which is why I mention the "numbers matching" thing.
I would want to see the paperwork on that before I believed it if I were trading to make sure it was actually the 295HP version and not the stock 195HP version.
