Default Will it fit???

So I've been spending the winter downtime looking for ways to improve the vette for the summer. I decided I'm replacing the worn out stock steering wheel with a replacement from ecklers. The only thing is I wanted to replace the horn button at the same time since its beat to hell and scratched. I was wondering would any other year horn button work on a '77? In particular I was looking at the C2 button and it looks great! I'd love to put on of those on.

Edit: Forgot to mention its a tilt/tele column if that makes a difference.

It is doubtful that a C2 horn button will fit a C3 wheel.

I thought so as well but just looking at it they seem to attach the same way. Also even though there were a few differences in the columns over the years according to midamerica the part where the horn button attaches to the column is the same for a C2 as it is for a C3.

well the 67 and up horn contact button with tilt, which the button attaches to, appears to be the same on the midamerica site. So it may depend on which C2 button you are considering.

The 67 button is the one I'll be trying. I was hoping someone on here had tried it already but i guess I'll be the one to find out!

Any of the 63-67 buttons should should snap into a stock 68-82 button retainer.

The retainer portion of all of the horn contact/button retainers used from 63-82, were the same. Only the lower portion, that made contact with the pin/spring assembly, was different.

So if I'm understaning you correctly it will snap in but not sound the horn?

No, it should snap in, and as long as your using the correct year retainer/contact, for the column you have, the horn should work fine.

The retainer part is the same for all 56-82 Corvette horn buttons. Only the bottom contact portion differed, depending on the year. The difference was the position and length of the tab on the contact, that contacted the spring loaded pin in the hub.

As long as your using the retainer/contact for a 77 tilt/tele column, everything should work fine. The only thing I'm not sure about, is if a 67 button is wide enough in diameter, to cover the 77 steering wheel's attaching screws (the screws that hold the wheel to the hub). The 77 button was a much larger diameter, than the 67. I may have a 67 button in stock. I'm leaving in a couple minutes, to help a buddy drop the body back on his 66 Corvette. If I have time when I get back, I'll try to take a look and see if I do have a 67 button, and if it will cover the mounting screws of a 77-82 wheel. I post up later today, what I find out.

As a final note. None of this pertains to 76 Corvettes, or 77-79's with the straight column, that have the 4 spoke plastic "Vega" wheel. The 4 spoke plastic wheel, uses a unique hub and retainer/contact, and nothing about it is interchangeable with any of the 3 spoke Corvette steering wheels.

Thanks! That'd be great. I thought about whether it could cover as well. Hopefully so. It seems it may be just large enough.

The 67 horn button, does cover the attachment screws of the 77-82 wheel, but just barely.

This is a new button, that I pulled off the shelf, so I didn't want to open it, but I think you can see that it should work with your 77 wheel.

The retainer/contact is missing from this column. I didn't bother putting one on for the pictures, since as I said, the button is brand new and I really didn't want to open it. If I didn't open it, I couldn't snap the wheel on to the retainer anyway. Still, you should be able to get a pretty good idea of if and how a 67 button, would work on your 77 wheel.

Wow thanks! It looks great too! Now to find a 67 horn button...
