I am trying to change the fuel pump on my 81. I have read that I should remove the bolt on the front of the engine by the pump and insert a longer bolt in the hole to hold the push rod in place. The only hole I see is on the front of the block and is just about even with the fuel pump mounting bolt. It is 3/8"X16 and does NOT have any bolt in it. I guess this is the bolt hole I am looking for, but should there be a bolt in this hole already! TIA.
you dont really have to mess with that bolt. I used a saw blade and pushed the rod up in place while at the same time sliding the filter into place. I also read that some people put some type of grease on the rod to hold it in place.
No bolt in that hole, I used it to hold the rod in place. Just made it easier to mount the pump with two free hands. Some guys use grease or some kind of "shim" to support the rod; I found that snugging up the rod with a long bolt worked quite easily.
If you are on the base of the cam lobe the rod will be all the way up in the block. You can do that by rotating the crankshaft with a ratchet and socket on the crank bolt until it gets to the base of the cam. A dab of grease on the rod will hold it in place.
I find this easier than fighting the pump lever spring against the rod and trying to install the two fuel pump mounting bolts.
Thanks everyone, I will try the dab of grease. If that does not work I will insert a bolt in the hole. When done I will also put a short 3/8"X16 bolt with some sealant on it in the hole. Thanks again. Have a great day.
