Default speedometer/odometer repair

As I continue with my new old C3, the odometer doesn't work.. the speedometer needle is kinda' bouncy too.

Anybody have any tips on how to proceed with repairs?

I hope to have the (tilt) column apart far enough to get to the
turn signal switch soon.... thought that might be a good time to
address the speedometer issues with the steering wheel out of the way.

Who else has had problems in this area?

not sure about the odometer not working, but the bouncy speedo sounds like the cable. If you have cruse control, I would start with the lower cable.

Check first with your DMV. Some states do not allow any changes to odometers.

I sent both the Tach and Speedometer out to Wilcox to fix and clean out, though about fixing it myself but after pulling the dash I want it correct when it goes back together.

After reviewing the odometer disassembly procedure... I may have to send mine out for repairs too... it looks like a real PITA.

There is bound to be a local speedometer shop near you that can handle it. It really is a pain best left to a pro.

Nice GT350, by the way. An ex GF had an orange GT500 428/automatic that was a hoot to drive.

Recommendation for tach/speedo repair businesses? Where do NCRS and the likes send their speedos/tachs for restoration? Personal recommendations?

I've got my console and center gauge panel out for repairs now... looks like only another
10 or so screws to pull the whole dash panel out of the car. Is now the time to get that speedometer outta' there?

[Rant on] Car has an aftermarket DIN style JVC CD player/stereo. A blind chimpanzie
with a sledge hammer and pair of hedge trimmers would have done a nicer job on the install than whoever did it. The gauge binacle is mangled, the wiring is atrocious and whole thing is loose in the mount. What a major cluster F*ck![Rant off]

Not sure what year you have but bouncing speedo was hard to eliminate when the car was new. Most people tell you to grease the speedo cable or cables (Cruise Control) 80 thru 82. Sometimes this works

78 & 79 speedo was pretty good

If odometer is not working but speedo is you have a gear issue in the speedo

If your trip odometer is not working but speedo and odometer is working, try pushing reset all the way in and pull reset all the way back. Reset button sometimes sticks and stop trip from working.

Hope this helps

Got the dash out of it this afternoon.... I'll start getting it disassembled tomorrow and will
likely send the speedometer out for repairs.

I shoulda' bought a nicer car to begin with... Hmmm, I guess it's too late now.

In the process of putting mine back together for similar reasons. Replaced Speedo and center bezel as well as upgraded dash to LED's. Made a big difference. Do whatever you can while it's apart. If you think getting everything out was a job, wait till you try to get it all to fit back together. You will NOT want to take it spray again! Make sure everything works before you start tightening the screws!

I've gotta look tomorrow to be sure, but I think with the upper dash pad removed, it might go back together somewhat easier than it came apart...

My upper pad needs a small repair to right side speaker grille so I'm thinking about yanking it outta' there anyway

Can anyone make a recommendation on where to send my speedometer for repairs? Instrument Services in IL can do it, but they have a 6 to 8 week turn around time, I was
hoping for something a little quicker.
