Default Clunking noise

Took the vette out for a nice ride today. On the way back I noticed a clunking noise when I let out the clutch. It seems to be coming from the right rear wheel. It may be a bad u-joint on the right half shaft. I'll have a look at it tomorrow and will probably change all of them to avoid any further issues later. Parts like these can be purchased locally, right?

Yes I'm sure you can purchase u-joints locally.

Before you start pulling those off I would look at the the rear differential front mount ('snubber') to see if the bushing is shot or the bolt is loose, etc. That you would likely have to order from one of the Corvette parts vendors. They're around $20 for the kit.

I was going to reply with the same thing. Often times the clunking sound you described comes from the front differential rubber mount being worn out. When putting it in gear with automatics or letting the clutch out on manual trans cars will exhibit this sound. I knew a gentleman that was about ready to replace his rear end on his 72 until I told him this as well which ended up being the problem. Saved him alot of time and money.

I have the exact same issue. Please keep us posted as to what it might be. My corvette is still disassembled from being painted so I haven't really had a chance to get it up in the air and look.

Had the same problem, mine was due to old fluid in the rear. New fluid and posi additive with a couple of figure 8's in a parking lot did the trick.

I checked it out yesterday and found that the outer u-joint on the passenger side half shaft was shot. I took out both and removed the old u-joints and will be putting in new ones very soon. Thanks for everyones replies.

Yup-just how it started out for me. Turned into new half shafts (with all new u-joints), then rebuilt trailing arms, a new emergency brake cable, and finally a new right rear caliper. Well then needed some new tires too and while they were off I rehabbed my old torque thrust rims.
Oh forgot, I removed the differential to fix a broken clip on the stub axel-so painted everything under there just while I had it apart. That is mission creep...easy to catch---cure is not cheap.

I see what you mean. I've decided to change out the rear shocks as long as it's apart anyway. Yeah, definitely mission creep.

Defiantly a good time to change out the rear shocks--hate to ask but how are those front shocks??? Forgot to mention the new radiator from DeWitts and a 7 blade fan found on ebay that had to be cut down to fit. Anyway finished it all yesterday-took it for a test drive and all seemed good-well atleast until the drivers side window (power) wouldn't roll back up. I've fixed both motor and switch on this before but I think I'll just drive it with the window down for awhile-trying to shake the creep!

I already changed out the front ones and the rubber bushings were completely gone. The PO drove it enough to where it was wearing a groove in the driver side upper control arm. After the rear shocks I think I'll move to the front and replace the ball joints. More mission creep.

If you still have a clunk, change the diff lube and definitely ADD POSI FLUID.
