How do I verify what tranny came factory in a 68. Looking at a 68 L71 with a M22. I'm pretty sure this motor should have the M21..... I have verified numbers matching engine with VIN. But I can't seem to find info in a few corvette numbers books I have about what tranny should have come in the 427 cars. I know only 80 L88 (heavy duty) motors in 68. And only 80 M22 tranny's that year. Am I to assume only the L88 cars got the M22 ?? And the L71 cars came out of the factory with the M21 ?? Should tranny serial numbers correspond to either the block number or VIN ??
Thanks, Tom.

Hi Tom,
You are correct in your assumption: only the L88 received the M22s. I believe (and someone please correct me if I am wrong) that the only transmission you could get with the L71 was the M21. Your muncie should also have your abbreviated VIN stamped on it as well as the muncie stamp.
Should look very similar to this (except your muncie stamp will not have the last letter on it after the date code):
