I never looked at the bottom of my 72 vet but the 71 that I just bought has the spare tire holder & cover off. on c-3 all gas tanks have the sending unit mounted from the bottom mine drips gas, going to drain tank today be for I have fire.
If it's leaking at the sending unit, it probably needs a new gasket. There's a unique O-ring gasket under the cam lock that holds the sender in. You can get them from any of the Corvette vendors.
It's also quite possible that the tank itself is leaking, it wouldn't be the first one to rust out.
There is a "rubber" seal that fits on the electrical stud (inside the tank) that conducts the signal from the sender to the lead wire. On oem units, a nut is used to compress the seal. On after market units, a push nut is used. As I was pushing the wire onto the sender on an after market unit, the stud loosened and dripped gas. I had to drain the tank, and I threaded the push-nut stud for a #4 nut because the push nut wouldn't hold. The only problem was that I went into the garage after dinner for a little quickie job to connect the wiring harness and test the meter. I didn't think having gas dripping all night was a good idea, so I was out in the garage till about 10 o'clock. Was the wife pissed!!
thanks everybody I have learned so much the last three days. I unhooked the battery loosened the pos nut and gas ran out. so drained tank put every thing back together with small o-ring between the non conductive washers put nut tight put in gas does not leak yet.
