If they are as busy as you said, they may have just been feeling you out to see if it was worth the time to leave the shop and drive to your house. Possibly they felt if you were really serious you would have brought the car to them. Not saying this is the reason, but for a busy shop it could be a legitimate one. The good painters that I have known are not exactly the most sociable guys. A lot of customers will put up with their eccentrics because the work is very good (why they are busy even when they act the way you describe). I would not read more into the interaction then there was. If you were not happy with them now, it will be easier to move along to another shop.

They don't bind, bunch up and are easy to move around in, plus, when you go to the drag races, you can stash a beer or two in the pockets!!!

You're absolutely right on!!
#1 I figured That If I pay them a couple of hundred to drive five miles down the road that would show them I was serious. Btw They offer free estimates at their shop.
#2 That should have been their answer. "Mr. redcruz, you're going to have to load it on a trailer and bring it to us so you can get a fair estimate" That should have been the end of the conversation
and I should have added this earlier. I know what a busy shop looks like. Maybe I showed up at break time Maybe that's why they're booked til the fall.

If they are a high volume/ production shop then forget it. Places like that are usually backed-up and up to their eyeballs especially in insurance work.

OK, here's my $.02.We have a business( boat canvas) and we ( the wife and I) have been very fortunate in our success. It requires a lot of quotes, and we gladly give them out. However, there are only so many hours in a day, and if we went to everyone that wanted a quote, we wouldn't get anything else done. So we try and save everyone's valuable time, both the potential customer and us, by getting some info and giving a ballpark number. Sometimes people aren't in the same park we are, and when that happens, we try and come up with some more economical choices for them. I don't know if that happened or not, but to critisize someone for trying to explain why he is able to demand a high price and then you get insulted because he has a waiting list is wrong on your part. You should be asking WHY are so many people waiting in line to pay him so much money to paint their cars. When you can honestly answer that, you probably will end up calling him to make an appointment. Just my experience.

I'm with you. I don't like anybody who is selling me anything to ask how much I want to spend. They ought to know what their product is worth. I think they should be able to say something like it will cost somewhere between x and y depending on what we have to do. I'd even accept at least x.

Let's say you walk into a burger joint and say How much does a burger cost? They say: How much do you want to spend? You say: $7. They sell you a burger for $7. As you walk out you notice the sign says "McDonalds" and you know your burger isn't worth $7.

I know it's a crazy example but the point is if you let them know how much you have to spend I think they will take as much of your money as you let them.

When I was ready for a quote, I dropped by the body shop of choice and asked him to come by and look it over. He came by the next day, gave me a firm number. I took the car in, left it for 11 months and when it was done the original number was still the price.

Where else can you leave your car for an extended period of time and not pay much or anything at all (for storage) and still expect it to be there when you return?

When I am trying to hide a car I bought (…how many guys have done that? ) a good place to store it is at a paint and body shop. That way, when your lady starts looking around you don't have an extra car sitting there and any receipts I have I hide as well.

That way when I bring it home, and I say I bought it for X of dollars…I am not lying. I just am not mentioning I invested a little more.

Here you would have got a better result taking in a slab of beer and asking if they could drop by on their way to work or home and have a look at your car, I would also take some pics along for them to have a look at (I phones are so handy for this) As for dress code it pays to strike a balance between over doing it and looking like you haven't got two brass razzuolies to rub together, if you look rich you might get a padded price, oh wait we're talking corvette owner here that seems to be what happens with the price of everything:-)

I critisized him for trying to explain why he is able to demand a high price and then I got insulted because he has a waiting list ??? I don't know where you got that from. #1 he never gave me a price. # 2 if he has a long waiting list ,that's out of his control and more power to him for doing great work that's his reward ,a long list equals more dollars!! Nothing wrong with that. I think you missed the point of my post.

Exactly! Why would I tell him my budget will be(example) ten grand. When it could be a 8 grand job. He might just give me s great great deal and do it for $ 9995.00!!
