My 427 gets better MPG then you are getting.

AND you have $3.99 gas down there??? We are over $4.00 in the bay area.

91 is $4.49 right now.

Well, I buy it on a Naval Base here, so it's about a dime a gallon cheaper than on the outside. 76cc heads let me get by with the low octane stuff. Price has leveled off Thank God. Dropping a little actually. Very unusual if this continues, considering Memorial weekend is coming up.

Bastards.

Although the distributor is a new HEI and the carb had been rebuilt by a pro, things can still go wrong with them. Never did a compression check either. 66K on the odometer.
Interesting point on timing: The harmonic balancer shifted it's mark and the shop had to go by "ear" to time it. I have the replacement balancer here, along with the tools to pull & install it, as well as all the gaskets, and even a replacement timing chain/gear set. That timing may very well be the culprit. Just waiting for cooler weather to do it. This town is burnin' up right now. Really!

Thanks again.

Steve
I've run timing all over and never varied by more than a couple of MPG. As to the carb, you would be surprised at how many "pros" simply stick in the rubber seal cushion or smear a coating of epoxy over the well plugs and figure it is done. If they are not peened tight, and the area sanded so that the epoxy sticks, nothing seals. Also, the float. After it has been out of the carb awhile, it will dry and the builder think things are fine.

If your exhaust pipes are black, it isn't timing but raw gas being dumped down the engine.

Another issue that can destroy gas mileage is to have the gasoline return line break and literally pump gas out on the ground. However, that won't make your pipes black.

If you're using ethanol , you will loose mileage. 10% ethanol will cost you 5% mileage. Its not huge , but its something. 19 mpg becomes 18 mpg.

Pay more/get less/be happy......"We're the EPA--and we've come to help"...... 10 years ago I filled up with gas--normally get 25 mpg in the mini-van.....It got 31mpg---I had my daughter who was with me verify the numbers---makes you wonder what the tech did who was mixing the fuel at the refinery that day---maybe he didn't "thin" the main ingredient....

6.2 MPG would not be "normal".
This needs to be addressed, as beside the hit to your wallet, I suspect raw fuel not being burned, therefore dumping it down into the crankcase.
This fuel dilutes the oil, and then the oil looses its lubricating qualities..eventually even a bigger hit to your wallet, with abnormal engine wear.
Good luck, in getting this resolved.

I don't think it was the EPA that was responsible for ethanol...I think it was the corn growing barons who already get millions from the gov who gave lots to congressmen to have it added to our tanks and of course as a bi-product of their corn, the refinery's who make millions from it helping with the donations.
