Default 73 vin number problem

I have a 73 with this vin on the title (Indiana) and on the plate under the front left of the window.
1z37z3s40#### (hid last four numbers for security)
When I search it I am told the vin is too short by 3 numbers.
Anyone know what the problem is?
Is this a fake vin plate?
Stolen car?
I have owned the car for 20 years.

Who exactly told you it's short? it's the correct length from what I can see.

1Z37J3S40####
1Z=Corvette
37=Coupe
J=Base Engine (Yours is a 454, so it's a Z)
3=Model year 1973
S=Built in St Louis
40####=sequence number.

1973 Corvette VIN

Character Position Code Significance
1-2 1Z Chevrolet Corvette
3-4 37 Coupe
5 J Base Engine
5 T L-82 Engine
5 Z 454 Engine
6 3 Last Digit of Model year
7 S St Louis Assembly Plant
8-13 6 Digit Build Sequence Number

I'm guessing you or whomever told you was using some web program designed for modern cars, which have a longer serial number.

I agree.... whatever tool you are using does not support the shorter VIN numbers from that era.

Thanks to all who replied.
I found a decoder that worked for pre 81 cars.

Probably where you're seaching. You complete VIN will be 1Z37Z3S4xxxxx. The last five digits will be the consecutive unit number.

If you're playing with Carfax, your car is too old to be listed.
