Default Best ramp/jack

I want to be able to get under my car easily and safely. I want something that will give me some comfortable wiggle room when laying down under it but also safe so that I am confident enough to crawl under even if my husband is not home with me. Also, it would be great if it's portable because I live in Florida during the summer and would like to bring it along. What would you recommend.

The portable bit changes things.
I'd maybe suggest the Race Ramps since they are fairly light weight and with the different selections available you should be able to get the height your looking for.
A little spendy though

I own a pair of Ramps and also 4 jack stands. When getting up under the car Ramps work great and are safe as long as you pull up on them even. Pull the brake if lifting the front of the car and use a block of wedged wood or rubber wheel block if lifting the rear of the car.

Never just use a jack to hold the car always use a jack stand and lower the car onto it. I like to rock the car before I get under it to feel for stability because I know I will be rocking the car once I get under it.

I own 2 jacks and when putting my car up on jack stands I will use both jacks to lift it evenly then lower each side onto the jack stands. I will lift each side a few inches then to the other side and lift a few inches to the desired height. Than lower each side onto the jack stands.

Default I suggest double jacking....

I suggest double jacking with 8 instead of 4. jacks are cheap. also watch for soft feet (or one of the corners, not holding any weight since most floors are not perfectly level nor your frame). I thought it was very sobering when I had my C3 up on 4 jacks and bumped one of the 4 jacks out that had a soft foot or no load. So extra jacks for me

For one more option, here is the thread I started about my Kwiklift

Very happy with it so far.

I may have a set of the long Race Ramps that I would sell for $50 plus shipping. I moved and don't recall if I brought them along. If interested, I will look for them.

I have a Kwiklift. It's a strong steel ramp that has folding legs so the bottom of the ramp can be jacked up with a floor jack, drop the legs to convert it to a level, about 20" off the floor lift. It can be taken apart and stacked to the side of the garage, transported in a pickup or larger suv (though it is heavy with 8' sections), or it can be laid flat and parked on. I have mine set up as a ramp for parking, and I also have 4 casters that go under the legs so when I put it up as a lift, I can move it around as needed. It comes with a center bridge for jacking up the car on it to remove the tires, which I have a screw jack and bottle jack for. I bought mine used off of Craigslist for $700 a few months ago. It worked great for me when I removed my old sidepipes and installed the new Hooker sidepipes myself.

I'm not sure you can get both something portable and usable on a regular basis in one package.
A portable lifting system can be had but is not for extended use or for safely crawling around under the car.
That being said you could get something like this;
http://www.discountramps.com/exhaust...FRQmMgodbzIA4w
For use on the road. Carry a jack stand along and you would not take up all the room in the back.
A decent pair of ramps are gong to be large and unless they come apart are not going to be very portable.
These can get you up 2 1/2" and are light but still 27 1/2" long. So portable, sort of.
http://www.discountramps.com/plastic_car_ramps/p/6009/
Check around on that site, they have lots of various options.
When I want to work under my car I jack the end I need with a low profile high lift floor jack to get under and place concrete blocks under the tires. That gives me 8" of further height.

Here is what i was using until I built my own. I still have them and use them for oil changes on my DD. I think they are 8" very portable and sturdy too. They were $30. Can't remember where I bought them

By portable you mean put in the car and take with you, is that right?
In the event of roadside maintenance or maintenance at your destination?

They don't have to fit in my car but yes I'd like them to be fairly easy to transport. I really like the one you have but it's bigger than I had in mine for travel. Right now I am looking for a smaller version that I could have in Florida so that I can get under my car to clean my pipes. I know that sounds a little crazy, everyone tells me that there's no need for all that. That it doesn't matter what it looks like under the car, no one sees that. I don't care if it's not seen. If I can get to it, It will shine. Therefor I must get to it.

Are they safe to use alone. Are would I also need to have a jack or something as a precaution?

Yes, these are safe to use on their own. There are 69" long and 14" wide. The bottom of the tire is 10 off the ground when the car is on the ramps. They are some kind of plastic foam and are easy to move around.

I got a pair at auto zone. Haven't tried them out yet. Thanks a lot for the suggestion. I think they will work out fine for what I need.

Wow those look really nice. I picked up a pair of rhino ramps the other day at auto zone. I haven't tried them yet, but if for some reason I am not happy them, I would love to purchase those from you.
