Default Air Filter Question

My 78 L82 has the original air filter/breather,,, there is a vacuum port on the bottom that isn't connected to anything.. I'm guessing that it should be connected to a vac. port on the carb... Can someone tell me what this is for and how important is it to be connected.. I just noticed it yesterday.. Thanks..

do you have the pipe that connects to the air cleaner from the passenger side valve cover?

I think it goes to the flapper,,, Is it necessary to be connected,, It seems to run fine with it not being connected.. I'm not really sure what it's for.. Any info would be great... Thanks

the vacuum actuated flap in the air cleaner snorkel(s) was closed via a temp. sensor in the base of the air cleaner( on passenger side). when cold the flap would close and the snorkel would draw air from a tube that pulled warm air over the exhaust manifold to aid in cold weather driveability. when warm the temp sensor would turn off the vacuum to the flap and it would open and close off the warm air inlet, pulling cooler air through the snorkel. it isn't necessary to have it connected.... the flap(s) just stay open all the time....
