76 altimeter guage question

76 altimeter guage question
The altimeter guage on my 76 started jumping toward high charging and when running goes almost all the way to the right or the charging side of the guage. When at a stoplight the guage goes about half way to the left on the uncharging side. What do you think this could be going on.
