Default Speedometer cable growing

Replaced speedo cable a while back and has been working fine until 10 minutes into a ride the other day when the speedometer flat quit. No fluctuation/jumping. Just reads 0. Next day I disconnected the cable/housing/driven gear at the trans. When it came out, it looked like the pic. The driven gear sticks out 1/4-3/8" from the housing. The inner core is darn near 1/2" too long. Pulled the whole cable out this morning and the dash end looks fine. (I tested the cable with a reverse drill and passed with flying colors.) Pulled the core out and it looks fine. Somehow, that d*mn core has grown a half inch and I don't have any explanation. Have a new cable on order. We'll see. Have a wonnerful week, Bill

Is it possible that the housing shrank from heat?
Can you cut the inner cable shorter? I've looked at mine but never considered cutting it. Not sure if it would come unraveled or what.

Not easily. There are squared ends of the inner cable that fit in the driven gear and the speedo head. I don't know if trimming the driven gear end would work or not. The speedo head end of the cable has a permanent collar so shortening that end wouldn't make any difference. For $30 I'm going with the new cable. Gotta admit, this is gonna bug me for quite a while. Have a great week, Bill

Compare the old inner core to the new inner core for similar length.
