Default 1980 vette streeting wheel problem!! Help!!!!!!!

I just bought 1981 vette and steering wheel has gap. When i drive in straight line, i wont have much control on the steering (the car will be all over the street left and right)
so I took it to my mechanic and he told the part in the picture below needs to be replace because it has gap.

I'm not a mechanic and i dont much about it. I would really appreciate it if you could help me.
I need your help to identify what is this part? and where could i get from online? Is this really the part causing the problem?

Thats the steering box and yes they are available all over the web and vendors on this site.
However, Where is the gap? There are a couple things that can cause the problem you have and that one is about the most expensive, so I wouldn't start there
A close exam of the entire front suspension system: Bushings on the control arms, the power steering control valve can do it.
The "gap" are you talking about slop in the steering? turn the wheel to either side with little or no movement in the front wheels. Or maybe the "Rag Joint" its the coupler that connects the steering column to the steering box, when they die you can have 20 or 30* of steering wheel movement, its also available all over the place. Can't tell from the pics

Thank you so much for the help,

I dont much about vette so this might sound a dump question, did the 1980 vette come with both power and nonpower steering?
I know it might be a dump question but as i said i dont know much so the the right way is to ask the expert Because im ready to order the steering box and i wanna make sure if the steering box in the link you provided will %100 fit my 1980 vette considering weather it was power or nonpower steering.

And since im overseas and im not going to be able to return the bad steering box i have on my car right now to the company, i will have to choose the listing with core charge, right?

Thank you do much in advance

No. Power steering was standard on the 81 models.

All 1980 Corvettes came standard with power steering, but it really doesn't matter. On 63-82 Corvettes, the same steering box was used with both manual and power steering. On power steering cars, the power assist was provided by a divorced system, that was independent of the steering box.

If you buy a rebuilt steering box, you will have to pay a core charge. It wouldn't make any difference where you buy it. Everybody charges a core charge, because it's so hard to get cores back from people.

You could also replace the whole system with a Borgeson box. Less things to go wrong.

Keep in mind other parts could be really worn as well like the ball joints and tie rods.
Refreshing the whole front suspension made a huge difference on mine but I went with a Rack and Pinon kit.

Check the alignment for excessive tow out before blindly ordering/replacing parts... if it really is the box, the Borgeson conversion would be my choice.

You may want to check the adjustment on the steering box.

In the area that you circles, there is a lock nut and an adjusting screw.
This is used to take the free play out of the gear.

You can check to see if the box is loose by twisting the rag joint back and forth. There should be little to no free play.
