I don't think he meant it like that DG. I think he meant it like it "blowed up in my face"... I'm just wondering how you are going to weld that thing back together after getting the parts and oil back in. In the right order of course.

Why----I'm glad that you asked (since I did'nt go into detail).

After drilling (revised step: AND TAPPING FOR A TAPERED PLUG (for theOEM-Look--the hole would be welded after filling with oi & burping)a 3/16" diameter oil-fill-hole in the other end-cap and assembling the pieces in the correct order, the end-cap that was cut off (without damaging the internal pieces).....was beveled so the weld would penetrate better. The end-cap has to be compressed to butt against the main barrel since the rod seal is spring-loaded against the end-cap to seal properly/then the end-cap is tapped side-to-side to re-align it using a straight-edge against the barrel. Then...with NO oil in the barrel, weld-tacks are placed 180* apart every 1/4"or so to hold the end-cap securely in place. Then the Mig welder is turned to the lowest heat setting that will still provide a good weld...and then a continuous weld is made around the barrel gap while the end-cap and rod are submerged in water within 1/4" of the area to be welded to keep from damaging the internal seal on the rod...(It appears that GM used a special material seal so the welding process wouldn't ruin the seal...since I doubt they used the bucket of water-trick-LOL...............ALSO...blasting the end-cap with compressed air after welding it would be easier than the bucket-of-water-trick-LOL![/COLOR]

Then the end with the fill-hole is held upright (gently) in a vicce.oil is injected into the hole while the rod is moved in/out an inch or so (less movement as the air is burped out and the oil reaches the ffill-hole. Then-tap a short metal "plug" flush into the fill-hole and weld it "shut".....air cool the weld...then paint the damper your favorite color of Black.

I think I said that correctly/in order (PTSD/ADD/WXYZ/ETC. )
