I go in from the pass side very slightly towards the front, usually remove the wheel and have the frame on a stand so nothing is in the way of the hoist.

If you've got one of the older American made engine lifts, that has ample front extension, I always like going in from the front. We have an old Continental hoist, that we borrow from one of our circle track buds.
Either way your out there a long way with a heavy motor.
An extra friend (fat if possible) standing on the back of the hoist can prevent a possible heartbreak
