1969 was the first year with side post batteries. They had the terminals on the front side. It's very difficult to access the terminal bolts unless the hold down clamp is released and the battery is tilted toward the back of the car. The cables are too short to turn the battery around. I think '70 was the first year the battery was rotated so the terminals were on the back side, with cables that reached.

Just a side note, most cars will have the negative terminal out board so in a collision there is less of a chance for the positive terminal to contact metal(less of a issue in a fiberglass car)

Since the battery is only 6 inches away from my a$$.... in the event of a collision, the positive post touching metal would most likely be the least of my concerns!
