Hey guys.....I have a '69 convertible with the original seats. Needless to say, they are getting pretty rough. I would like to avoid a full rebuild of the seats right now (two kids 2 and under don't leave much in the Corvette budget). But I can't find any other options. I found neoprene seat covers, but they are for '70 and up. Does anyone have any other options short of having them rebuilt?
I don't want to replace them like that. It's not an NCRS car, but it's original enough I wouldn't feel right putting Fiero seats in it.
I'd like to recover them myself, but I have no idea how to do it or what I would be getting myself in to. I would hate to get started and realize I'm in over my head and be stuck with a half done job in the middle of summer.
I really would have liked to find seat covers as a short term solution, but it seems like no one makes them for seats older than '70.
I've done it twice myself with no idea the first time what I was getting into. The only specialized tool I remember are some hog ring pliers. You surely need new foam too which plumps up the upholstery a bit and really makes the job. The stays (?) are the trick to getting a professional looking job. They are metal wires inserted into sleeves into the covers and clipped to the framing with the aforementioned hog rings. They pull everything tight. Gotta be some YouTube thing somewhere on this
PM me your address. I haven't recovered seats yet - but Corvette Central was giving away installation CD's at last years Carlisle and I have an extra I can send you.
ignatz is probably correct, it didn't look too difficult from the CD. I hope not, plan to do the '76 before Carlisle.
