I'm trying to install new weatherstripping on the sides of my windshield. It's a 69 with the two peaces of stainless trim on the sides, under the weatherstripping. I'm trying to do a dry fit, before I glue anything down. When I tighten the screws down that go through the weatherstrip and the two stainless peaces into the birdcage, they pull the heads through the weatherstrip. Is that normal?

On my '72 I aligned the stainless trim and fastened it with its screws and then glued the W/S in place. If your W/S has slots over the screws my guess they are for future adjustments of the trim.
Not at all dumb... And before you install this.. you must make sure the retainers sit flat and do not rock. The retainers get bent when people either over tighten the screws or they don't realize there is another one some where.
Below will show you how to glue in place and where the tape goes.
Thank you gentlemen, for clearing this up for me. Is the rubber that goes between the two stainless parts ,something I can buy or do I need to make something?
it's not available... yet.. But you can use what is called channel tape..(thin rubber used to hold glass in a channel). Most glass companies that install door glass in houses will have this. I don't know the thickness to tell you though... Hopefully you have some left. it's pretty thin.
