I just successfully removed my spare tire and carrier assembly in preparation for a new rear spring. Let me first say that I tried PB Blaster for the first time (seems new to Canada) and it is now my new best friend! Let's just hope it works as well on the spring bolts!
The big surprise is that the spare doesn't look to have ever been out of the car! It is the original Firestone G70 with the thin white stripe and still has the yellow paint in the treads and all of the little nibs on it. The rim has some spot rust but the paint still shines. Anyone need a date coded tire for a 73 restoration?

I'd expect that somewhere out there in NCRS land, someone will be extremely happy to buy this tire and wheel.
I think by getting rid of the spare tire and carrier, you get rid of about 50 pounds. The rear spring, ~41 pounds can be replaced with a composite 8 pound spring. You have an opportunity to remove about 83 pounds from your car, if you don't want to drive with a spare tire..

I wonder how many spares actually were used. I pulled mine out and it was covered in West Texas dust and had taken on the shape of the carrier.
The date code is 033 which puts it into January 73. My car's build date is February 8, 1973, so, thats about right.....on second thought maybe I should keep it with the car!
