Not to sound stupid but how do yo remove the caliper bolts on the front brakes. There is a metal plate that gets in the way of the socket. Does that need to be removed?

Undo these two bolts and pull the caliper up off the rotor. You might be working on the wrong bolts on the ends of the caliper... those hold the two halves of the caliper together
