My son's 68 started making a noise from the rear end. We found that the yokes (probably the wrong term) on the half axles slide about 3/8s or 1/2 inch into the side of the diff. We are thinking this is the issue. However it does seen they should move somewhat, like the yoke going into the tranny. So, should they move and how much? Thanks

When was the last time you changed the differential fluid and additive?
That much play in the side yokes is excessive. Others will chime in here, but I think you have a lot of play in the side gears and perhaps even a dropped c-clip. I would consider replacing the differential assembly or having that one rebuilt.
Several forum members can do that for a reasonable price and know how to do it correctly. Search "differential rebuild" and they might show up in the results. Mike Dyer is one (search or google for TracDogg) or equally well-known is Gary Ramadei (GTR1999). There are others and you may have a local rebuilder who could handle it for you.
I found my problem just in time with excessive end-play......a C-clip was missing.....
It took 20 minutes and a magnetic tipped rod to find the clip and slide it into a spot that I could see it (the other clip was just starting to deform/fail).....this could have been a very costly failure that only cost me $2 woth of new C-clips.....new diff. oil and a week-end of learning .......ohhhhh-----I cleaned and painted everything that I removed while I was "at-it".
All the bearings and surfaces were in tolerance and good appearance....I only had to "dress up" and deepen the C-clip grooves for a snug fit (being a machinist, I saw that the C-clip grooves were not deep enough per the Machinist's Handbook......causing them to deform and pop out of the shaft grooves)
Maybe you can catch your diff. problem early!
