I have a 79 which is pretty rough. The previous owner told me that the engine in it is not the original SBC. Is there anywhere you can use the engine number to determine what the engine originally came out of?
Any advice would be appreciated.
There is an engine stamp pad on the front of the block on the passengers side. You can just Google GM engine decode charts on the net to look up the year and the vehicle it was originally installed in.

I gave it a go but I can't seem to yield a result. The code is 2M0603 7VP. Any ideas?

Thanks for the info. Yes, I spoke with a friend of mine and he took a look at it and from a list he had and he said the same thing. It even has Mexico stamped on it. I guess that is not such a good thing? I have a new BluePrint 383 for it so I was trying to ascertain if it was the original engine so I could decide if I should keep it or sell it. Seeing that it isn't the original engine as suspected I think I might as well cash it in (to partly pay for my new transmission).
Thanks, Colin

Not particularly a bad thing. You have an over the counter Chevrolet engine with a block cast in Mexico. I'm not certain the engine was assembled in Mexico, but it could have been.
If you have the optional YJ8 aluminum wheels on your car, they were made in Mexico at the Kelsey-Hayes facility there.
