hey guys i just installed a new p/s pump and control valve. it now appears that the hoses to and from the pump are leaking where they transition from rubber to steel near the valve. is it possible that the new pump is creating a higher pressure causing them to fail, or is it something i have overlooked, thank you in advance
Since you went through all the work to replace the pump and control valve it would have been a good idea to replace the hoses at the same time. The control valve to steering ram hoses are available at Advance Auto. I don't know if the pump to valve hoses are available there as well but it would be worth checking. They aren't expensive and you will have a nice new system when finished.
I'm about to do the very same thing, but I'm going to replace the hoses too. ZIP Corvettes has a complete kit (p/s control valve, p/s cylinder and all hoses) for $239.00. Haven't order it yet...plan to do it in the morning.
Thanks for the hind sight Rick. the new set of 4 hoses has been ordered for 57.99 from eBay. Just curious if anybody had any insight as to why it happened or if there was perhaps a common mistake that I may have made(other than not replacing them the first time)
be careful when you put the hoses on bottom. Ask me how I know. car was old they popped I thought maybe cause they're old. they sprayed everywhere no parts store had hoses in stock and I couldn't wait for shipping or make custom ones luckily I have J and d near me I smashed over there quick because they closed early on Saturdays got the one hose put it on. Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be well a couple weeks later they pop again this time I got all 4 and found out the reason they popped was that the 2 bottom hoses would rub everytime I did a turn so when your done turn the wheel all the way to left and right and adjust hoses accordingly.
Great advice thank you. I did notice that I had put the one hose on in the way of the ram and it was rubbing. It had only Been about 20 miles so it hadn't rubbed through yet. I only saw the hoses leaking at idle but the way the fluid was dispersed I wondered if it had been spraying out when I turned
Just some advice.. Seating the hoses to the valve or cylinder can require you to place a few drops of fluid on the end of the hoses before they are tighten. If you do this and they leak, you should back them off and re-tighten them again.. This will usually solve the issue. If they are leaking form the crimp, then they need to be replaced.
Pull the front driver's side wheel. It makes access to the control valve easy. I could never get the threads on the hose connections started without pulling the wheel.
Thanks man, this is the second valve Ive put on this car the first one leaked before 100 miles. I had to send it back to rock auto. We'll see how this one holds up. Needless to say I'm about worn out with the p/s system on this car
Had a slight leak in an original hose on my 78. Had all hoses replaced. Then it started leaking where the lower hose on the pump threads into the pump. Supposedly it was fixed. Just got it back and I'm monitoring it to see.
