Default 1971 Casting Numbers Question

Hi, this photo is from a 1971 convertible, BB 454, auto. From the photo it appears:
T1204CPJ
C11S104783 (matches VIN)

It supposedly is the original block/engine. Does it look correct?

The paperwork shows the car was first titled/registered Sept 20, 1971. The 1204 in T1204CPJ indicates it was stamped Dec 4, 1970. Would this be possible?

Thank you for your help and comments.
Nick

Sure, it just took awhile for the car to sell. These were not an inexpensive car when new!

Yes, possible. T1204 indicates the engine was assembled at Tonawanda (T) on December 4th, 1970 - very shortly after the strike ended at St. Louis and production had resumed.

The car could have been at a dealership until September, 1971 when the title was issued. By that time, 72 production was under way so the 71 would have been last year's model.

The engine stamp sure looks correct compared to my '71 BB.

As far as the paperwork goes, when I was car shopping in '68 to '72, I would come across a lot of "new" cars being driven by the owner of dealerships or salesmen. These cars weren't titled until they were sold, so that might be the case with the car in question.

The numbers you refer to are actually "Stamped" not "Cast". There are cast numbers on the block, check for them on the rear flange behind the distributor.

If you're thinking of buying this car and are going to pay 'original engine' dollars for it, have the seller gently remove the paint from the pad. What's there now could be a half decent fake or the real deal.

Hi 58-66,

Just helping to pointing out the difference for you.

The casting numbers are another clue to the build sequence of the car/motor.

when there is paint on the pad then all bets are off. The factory left them unpainted.
what is the trim tag date and what is the casting number and casting date of the engine block ( back behind the distributor)?
