Just acquired a set of reproduction chrome aluminum rims for my 79. Put them on today and there is a slight rub on the back side of the right rear. The rub is not constant and makes me think it is the raised letters hitting. Anyone know if there are thin spacers maybe 1/8 inch available and if this would be safe to try???
My project car made a rubber-rubbing sound like yours.....it was because a previous owner put extra-wide tires on the rear and the raised letters on the inboard sides of the tires were rubbing against the ends of the spring main leaf.
Rookie advice: 1/8" is not enough for going over bumps/potholes/parking lot entrances/ curbs/etc...........add as thick a spacer as possible that will not "overload the spindle bearings" and will not cause the outer walls of the tires to rub on the inner rear fender lip.
Thanks for the advice....Went back out tonite to check e brake cable clearance....Pulled the wheel back off and it was right there in front of me.....Stick on wheel weights are rubbing on the caliper causing the intermittent noise.....
