A/C cooling issue.. Hope someone can help
I have a C3 corvette model 1980 and I'm having an issue with the A/C.
When the car moves the A/C is cooling perfectly and it's cold. However, when the car is standing still and not moving or moving slightly due to traffic it doesn't cool that much.
I asked few guys and they said that there is no fan cooling the compressor which is causing this. But the problem is that there is no space to install a fan for the compressor.
Any idea guys how to over come this issue?
Awaiting to your advises.
Thanks.
As to the problem; it could be two things: 1) low refrigerant in the A/C system, or; 2) insufficient airflow through the condenser.
You really need a gauge set to help in the diagnosis. You can test the airflow situation by running tap water over the condenser with the system running to see if this brings the duct temps down. If it does, then you might need a new fan clutch or new seals for the shroud. This isn't a perfect test, though. You'd really want to be reading the high side pressure to see how it reacts. It will always drop but you want to do a before and after to understand the problem since it could be a compressor on its last legs.
If it is low on refrigerant and still has the R12 charge, you will have to farm the job out to an A/C pro. If it's a R-134a conversion, it may still be better to farm it out since you might not be able to address a charge issue with a can. Conversions are rather touchy when it comes to refrigerant charge and it's best to read the high and low sides of the system while monitoring the duct temps.
