Default 72 rebuilt power steering pump

my power steering pump is howling so I thought I would replace it.

ive never done this before but I figure its nuts and bolts and some fluid, it shouldnt be too hard.

I ordered a rebuilt pump online and got this (Cardone, fits 63-74).

this doesn't look like the pump on my 72. what am I supposed to do with this?

thanks for any help.

back of the pump. the return on my pump points to 5 o-clock. the return on the replacement pump points to 9 o-clock.

Looks like it will fit to me, you just need to get a puller/installer for your pulley

Patience and a manual is required. GM is notorious for a fastener that requires excssive effort to remove. A pulley puller/installer maybe rented from auto parts store. Pump may come with pulley install consisting of 3/8 bolt, washer,&nut. - not the best but will work. The reservoir or" Can" tends to get bent causing leaks because it gets pried on adjusting belt. In the "old days" the Can was a transfer part. Transfering the return hose to "can" is a PITA ...patiences. If you decide to try to transfer original "can" you will need seal kit every thru hole requires seal and it is somewhat fragile. tighting bolts to draw it on may bend "can" only FSM from any older gm some ford, chrys, amc, may have info concerning "Saginaw" P/S pump is seems they all used it at one time or another

thanks everyone for the help.

here's a couple pics of my pulley. does this pulley in fact need a puller or is it held on with the nuts? I don't see where a puller would grab on to the pulley.

the rebuilt pump shaft has a threaded end and a keyway.

hold on a sec.

what I think is an inner nut, isn't actually a nut but the flange on the pulley that a puller would grab ahold of.

am I correct?

I'd say no, you don't need a puller/installer. It looks like it has a nut that holds it on and the inner part that looks like a nut is just a part of the pulley so you can use a wrench to tighten the nut against it (if that makes sense)...

By the way, I'm fighting power steering pump issues, I will soon be going on my third "rebuilt" pump. first one leaked, this one stopped working. I pulled the valve off the back to see what I could see (of course you really need to know what it is you're looking for), put it back together and it's working ok - for now

if mine gives me more headaches than I am willing to take, I may just switch it over to manual and take all the power components off.
ive owned cars in the past with manual steering and it wasn't the end of the world.

I changed mine out and I don't have a puller.

That pump body looks more like the older (C2?) pumps with that longer, round filler tube. Mine was an exact replacement, I got it from Lone Star Caliper.

Hi as Airborne said the second "nut" on the pulley is there so you can tighten the outside one. You may get lucky as I did and once the nut was off the pulley came off without a puller. Some pump pulleys had holes in them that allowed you to get at the mounting bolt behind the pulley so that you could remove it and take the pump out with the pulley still attached, not sure what year they started to do this though. FWIW I think it is a bit of a gamble getting any of the so called rebuilt pumps as they usually seem to just have new seals, maybe a reservoir and a paint job. You are entirely at the mercy of the re-builder as to how good the core was before rebuild. I got one and within no time it started to moan just like the original one:-( I have one on order from a supplier who grinds the case of the pump and fits new vanes etc and it seems that the number of suppliers who do this are the same as unicorns have horns:-)
