Default What Engine???

I have a 1968 coupe. It is supposed to have the 350hp L79. The engine is stamped V0706HT, which is correct for an L79, however the heads casting numbers are 3917291, and intake 3927184, which should be the base 300hp. Compression on all cylinders is in the L79 range 170-180 psi. It also came with what is supposed to be the original Q-jet carb. I'm assuming the engine isn't original and was restamped. If that is the case, why the high compression?

My references say both 3917291 heads and intake 3927184 are good for 350 hp 1968.

EDIT: NCRS notes 184 intake found on '68 after late June '68... your assy code is July.

Post up some pics of the stamp pad, the casting date of your block, the build date on the trim tag, and the VIN and we can continue to look at it, but Im not seeing why you think its a restamp.

The 3917291 heads are correct for 68 300hp and 350hp engines.

...intake 3927184...
The 3927184 intake manifold is for a 69 and should not have the oil fill tube. Correct for 68 would be 3919803.

7028219 for 68 327/350hp.

What is the casting number of the block? Does the pad have your VIN derivative stamped on it? Do you have pics of the pad?

All of the references I've found "web" show the L79 heads should be 3917292, and the intake 3919803. I will post the pics.

Mike agrees with everything I said including wanting the block casting numbers and pics of the pad. Great minds think alike.

...except on the intake: my NCRS JG shows the 184 intake being used on 300 and 350 hp '68s after June.

Black Book: 291 heads = 300, 350 hp
NCRS 68-82 Spec Guide : 291 heads = 300, 350 hp
NCRS Judging Guide 68-69 : 350 hp engine = 291 or 292 heads

New Edition NCRS JG lists 184 OK for after June 1968 350 hp.

I'm with you, VB. I figured you had the Judging Guide closer at hand than I do at the moment.

VIN matches up to July production per assy code. It would be interesting to check the cast date and the trim tag date, but Im still not seeing anything that would concern me here.

Block casting date is F278, June 27 1968. Trim tag date L11, July 11 1968. From what I'm hearing the engine is the correct L79 with a 1969 intake?

Yes, I think so. Its not a 1969 intake, its late 68 & 1969.

Other feel free to chime in.

Curious: as Mike asked, does it have the oil fill tube? Whats the date on the intake?

The intake does have the oil filler tube. Intake casting date is F198.

327 manifolds had the oil fill tube. 350s did not. If yours has the oil fill tube, it's almost certainly 68.

I agree with VB. I think you're good and your engine is likely to be original.

I had an L79 project I sold a few years ago. One owner and VERY original 50k mile car. It was an Aug 68 build, and had the 184 intake with oil tube.
